Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason

 Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. After a messy lawsuit battle between Roger Waters and the rest of the band, David Gilmour took charge of the group moving forward. This was their first release during this period. Let's see how it sounds.

We open of Signs Of Life, greeting us with river noises and powerful synth chords. A surprising opener to this album. The synths remind me of the ones on Welcome To The Machine.

In contrast to the moody atmosphere of the opener, Learning To Fly is loud and in your face. We have reverb drenched drum machines and synth chords to back up the guitar and vocals. Yup, this album is very 80s. And whilst I love the 80s, this song sounds very outdated.

The Dogs Of War sounds exactly like Learning To Fly, but this time we open on an ominous marching melody, and it generally sounds a bit more epic, compared to the previous track.

One Slip opens on some very annoying sound effects, and once we get to the main song, we find another generic sounding song.

On The Turning Way would have been a breath of fresh air if the more acoustic, relaxed melody it had at the beginning would have remained, but unfortunately, we find ourselves facing another generic sounding tune.

Yet Another Movie, yet another basic sounding song. And this time, it sounds WAY to overblown, as if Imagine Dragons made a song in the 80s. And it also drags on for way to long.

Round And Around is a short interlude, with not that much to it.

A New Machine (Part 1) is another short interlude, that's is mainly just Mr. David Gilmour's vocals with some robotic voice, and some high pitched droning synth chords in the background.

Terminal Frost actually sounds pretty nice. It has some gentle guitar plucks here and there, nice synth chords, no vocals, and a generally nice atmosphere.

A New Machine (Part 2) is basically the same song as it's counterpart.

And we end on Sorrow, which sounds decent actually. The guitar has a very nice and crunchy distortion effect on it, but apart from that, that's pretty much it.

So overall, this album sounds very 80s, but very outdated at the same time. The use of drum machines create this weird, monotone feel to the rhythm, ultimately ruining most of the songs on here.

Favourite tracks: Signs Of Life, The Dogs Of War, Terminal Frost, Sorrow;
Score: 4/10
