Joy Division - Closer

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing Joy Division's second and last album, Closer. Released 2 months after frontman, Ian Curtis committed suicide, we see a bit more of a different sound compared to Unknown Pleasures . We open on Atrocity Exhibition, the song, not the album. Anyway, it's pretty good, but I find the vocals rather annoying and the percussion doesn't sound very powerful. Isolation has better sounding vocals, but the percussion on here still sounds pretty bad. The song, in general, sounds rather goofy. Passover finally brings us some substance. Ominous guitars and vocals, powerful drumming and thicc basslines. Colony is in the same vein, but this sounding a bit brighter. A Means To An End is rather forgettable, in my opinion. It doesn't really stand out in anyway. Heart And Soul, on the other hand, brings us something new. Reverb drenched... everything, gentle synth pads, heavy basslines and some very nice percussion. Twenty

Queen - The Miracle

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing Queen's 1989 release, The Miracle. After the disappointment that was A Kind Of Magic , I was hoping that Queen would give a more substantial release. Let's see what they gave us... We open on Party. A pretty nice, jammy song, but JESUS CHRIST WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE PANNING?!?!?! The vocals are on my left and on my right, and the guitar is spinning around me, like... what? Khashoggi's Ship was a decent song, but rather forgettable. Then we have the title track. This song is incredibly nostalgic to me. I don't know about you, but my dad would play this all the time. I love this song so much. The guitar, the vocals, the melodies are just amazing. But that transition from the end is a bit weird, but apart from that, this song is amazing. I Want It All. yes please. The Invisible Man is a pretty nice song, but a bit annoying in my opinion. I get the vocals are meant to be all animated and such, but I find

Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. After a messy lawsuit battle between Roger Waters and the rest of the band, David Gilmour took charge of the group moving forward. This was their first release during this period. Let's see how it sounds. We open of Signs Of Life, greeting us with river noises and powerful synth chords. A surprising opener to this album. The synths remind me of the ones on Welcome To The Machine. In contrast to the moody atmosphere of the opener, Learning To Fly is loud and in your face. We have reverb drenched drum machines and synth chords to back up the guitar and vocals. Yup, this album is very 80s. And whilst I love the 80s, this song sounds very outdated. The Dogs Of War sounds exactly like Learning To Fly, but this time we open on an ominous marching melody, and it generally sounds a bit more epic, compared to the previous track. One Slip opens on some very annoying sound effects, and once we g

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing the Godfather of the genre that I love so much, post punk. The Godfather album, the legend among us post punkists, Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. The debut record of English post punk act, Joy Division, was at the same, their second to last release, due to the untimely passing of the band's frontman, Ian Curtis. But let's not think about these unfortunate events, you have come to this blog to read an album review. Let's see how this record sounds... The first song on the album is Disorder, which gives a perfect taste this album is. Sharp drums, thicc basslines and echoey guitars. The vocals are also very spacious, the production in general is very lucious and spacey. An amazing opening to this album. Day Of The Lords contrasts with the previous song, as this track is much slower, heavier and ominous. The vocals are also full of growns and more monotone. The guitar is also very low pitched, and soun

Queen - A Kind Of Magic

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing A Kind Of Magic. This was Queen's last tour promoted album, due to Mr. Freddie Mercury's declining health. Let's see how this album sounds. We open on One Vision, a pretty good rock song, with a lot of synths mixed with classic rock instruments. The vocals were pretty nice too. Not that bad of a start. A Kind Of Magic was an OK song with some nice vocals, but generally, it wasn't that special at all. One Year Of Love was probably Queen's attempt to try make another slow, love song like Las Palabras De Amor from Hot Space . Problem is... it isn't good. Pain Is So Close To Pleasure sounds like the cheesiest 90s pop song that would play on the radio very late at night... and that song is bad. Friends Will Be Friends is extremely cheesy and annoying. Do not want to hear this song again. But... on the other hand... Who Wants To Live Forever... I don't think I need to say anything else. Gimme Th

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing The Final Cut. This album is often considered a lesser version of The Wall . Personally, I don't find The Wall itself that impressive. It's good, don't get me wrong, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. Anyway, let's see how this album stands up. We open on The Post War Dream. A slow, organ driven song and soft vocals. Nothing else to say here. Your Possible Pasts is a decent rock song, with a nice guitar solo. But it generally doesn't have that much substance. One Of The Few is a short acoustic guitar interlude. Pretty nice song. When The Tigers Broke Free was a decent song, but it was too dramatic. The vocals were awful on this track, and the instrumental was just way too overblown. The Hero's Return was a mediocre song. The vocals were also pretty bad here as well. The Gunner's Dream was actually pretty nice. The saxophone on here was very smooth, and the slow beat added to the atmosph

Top 10 Aphrodite's Child Songs

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be ranking my top 10 Aphrodite's Child songs. Let's get straight into it. 10) Break: A great end to 666 , featuring some very warm vocals and a really welcoming guitar solo, as if the credits are rolling on the band's career. 9) Rain And Tears: A sweet ballad with some of my favourite instrumentals in all of Aphrodite's Child's career. The vocals are especially gentle on this song. 8) Marie Jolie: As much as I did not enjoy It's Five O'Clock , this and 2 other songs on this list hold it up. This song is a psychedelic ballad, with beautiful vocals as usual. 7) The Grass Is No Green: Incredible psychedelic prog rock song. Filtered vocals and abstract instrumentals create such a beautiful atmosphere. 6)  It's Five O'Clock: A nice and gentle soft rock song, with some very nice vocals. Some of my favourites from Aphrodite's Child. 5)  Lament: Probably the band's most ominous song, it has a slo

Aphrodite's Child - 666

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, we are reviewing the third and last album from Aphrodite's Child, 666. Now despite the very evocative title, it does not have links to Satanism or the spread of the worship of evil. Quite the opposite, it actually contains verses from The Book of Revelation, a.k.a. The Final Book Of The New Testament. Now that I have got that out of the way, this record is the band's most critically acclaimed, and for good reason. Let's talk about why it is. We open on a choir chanting "We found The System". Then we transition into Babylon, an acoustic rock song, with a very groovy feel to it, accompanied by some crowd screaming. A very nice song to be sure. We turn to a calmer demeanor, with Loud, Loud, Loud, featuring a young boy narrating about the day the world will stop. As wind chimes plink, we hear Mr. Demis' gentle voice, as we enter The Four Horsemen, referring to The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse. This song is an abs

Queen - The Works

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, we are reviewing The Works. After the disaster that was Hot Space, I was hoping for a better up, and return to their original sound. I somewhat found that. We start with Radio Ga Ga. No comment needed. Tear It Up sounded a bit generic, in my opinion. Nothing special, but would have fit very well on their debut . It's A Hard Life was a wonderful ballad. Nothing else to say. Man On The Prowl was a rockabilly, but whilst Crazy Little Thing Called Love was catchy and more fast paced, this one just fades in the background. Machines sounded very weird. That's it. Not even the rock parts were that special. Rather forgettable, honestly. i   w a n t   t o   b r e a k   f r e e . Keep Passing The Open Windows was a pretty nice rock song, but rather generic. No outstanding vocals, no crazy guitar solo, just mediocre stuff. Hammer To Fall was a very nice hard rock song. Not much else to say, just really frickin sweet. Finally, we end with I

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Image
Oh baby, The Wall. This giant. Let's get to it! In The Flesh? opens the album with a melancholic hard rock song. Slowly, towards the end, a lot of noise and static kicks in. Then we have The Thin Ice. A slow, piano driven song with rather mean vocals, as if he's mocking us, and then, a loud guitar solo kicks in. After that, a reverberated bassline kicks in, accompanied by whispering vocals. An overall very moody and suspenseful song. After that, The Happiest Days Of Our Lives brings in another groovy bassline, building up into we don't need no education . Next we have Mother, a nice rock song. Goodbye Blue Sky is a dramatic song, with a generally very dark feel to it. Empty Spaces is very empty, until the guitar kicks in, transitioning into Young Lust, a groovy song, with some epic vocals. One Of My Turns is a bit weird. Odd vocals, and a decent instrumental. Don't Leave Me Now also sounded a bit weird. Another Brick In The Wall Part 3 is just a shorter and more aggress

Aphrodite's Child - It's Five O'Clock

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, we will be reviewing Aphrodite's Child's sophomore album, It's Five O'Clock. Not much else to say here, let's jump straight into this album. We start with the title track. A slow, mellow ballad, with a beautiful vocal performance from Mr. Roussos. A must listen. Wake Up sounds like a song from the beginning of The Beatles' career. That wouldn't be so bad, if the lyrics and vocals weren't so generic. Neither is the instrumental something to talk about. Take Your Time sounds like the most generic American folk song you'll ever hear. The harmonica sounds "bored", and the vocals are just decent. It also has one of the most boring instrumentals in the band's entire career. On the other side, we have the beautiful Annabella. The gorgeous vocal performance, soft, whimsical instrumental, they all create an amazing song. A much needed refresher from the previous two songs. Let Me Love, Let Me Liv

Queen - Hot Space

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today we are reviewing what is often considered the worst Queen album, Hot Space. But why? you might say. Well, the band had slowly been diverging more and more from their rock sound, and towards a more pop influenced sound, causing many fans to be very disappointed. I, for one, love synthpop and synthwave, however past Queen songs in this style have been mediocre at best. Let's see how this album holds up. We start with Staying Power, which sounds like your standard 80s synthpop song, thus making it sound generic and forgettable. The horns weren't anything special, and was generally just a mediocre song. Dancer was, once again, super generic and forgettable. Tho it reminds me of The Rick Dance song for some reason. Back Chat, again, generic. It's the same problem here as with most Imagine Dragon records: The songs sound identical! Body Language and Action This Day, whilst not as generic, are mediocre at best. Put Out The Fire give

Pink Floyd - Animals

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, we are reviewing the third album in Pink Floyd's Big 4, Animals. This record was fueled by political instability and the displeasure with the goverment that the band had at the time. Tensions between Mr. Roger Waters, lead writer and bassist of the group, and Mr. Richard Wright, piano player of the group, were rising, later leading to Wright getting temporarily fired for a short amount of time. Let's see how this album sounds. We start with Pigs On The Wing Part 1, a short acoustic song, with an overall really warm feel. The previous song lasted just over a minute and a half. The next song, Dogs lasts 17 minutes... yeah. In this album, the band talks about the three classes of society: Pigs, Dogs and Sheep, in this descending order. We start with a nice, slower rock song, talking about a metaphorical Dog, who is growing older and older, getting more and more paranoid, and he grows older, he starts getting darker and darker thought

Aphrodite's Child - End Of The World

Image
Welcome back to my blog. Today, we will start reviewing the short discography of Aphrodite's Child. Who is Aphrodite's Child, you may say. Well, it is a Greek band formed in 1967, comprised of world famous singer, Demis Roussos, highly talented musician, Vangelis and Loukas Sideras. How did I discover this band? Well, a while back, I was watching L EMMiNO 's documentary, Grazed By The Apocalypse . During this video, he plays a short clip from the title track of this album. I really liked, so I listened to it. On repeat. Now I have blog where I review albums. I listened to all three of their albums in one Minecraft session. Let's jump into their first album. The title track opens on a bunch of keys slammed, as Mr. Demis Roussos' vocals creep in. Beautiful instrumental, gorgeous singing, amazing vibe. This is a song for the ages. We suddenly move to a much groovier song, with Don't Try To Catch A River. Some very jazzy horns play, as we also hear traditional per
