Nirvana - Nevermind

Image
Happy Halloween everyone! Today, I will be reviewing Nirvana's sophomore release, Nevermind. After there rough, but acceptable debut , I was curious as to how the band would improve. These guys aren't legendary for no reason. Listening to this album, we see improvements on all fronts from the band. Plus, Dave Grohl is now on drums. Anyway, let's see what they have too offer on here... and we start with smells like teen spirit. very nice. then in bloom. very nice. come as you are. breed. and lithium. yeah the beginning of this album goes hard. Then we take a break from the hard rock with Polly, probably the band's darkest song. It only features an acoustic guitar and Kurt's raspy voice. The song is a tribute to a 14 year old who was kidnapped and tortured, the lyrics reflecting the perspective of the kidnapper. It's haunting, yet hard hitting. Territorial Pissings sounds like a more aggressive pop punk song. Kurt screams at the top of his lungs on here. Combine

Death Grips - Fashion Week

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing the instrumental album by Death Grips, Fashion Week. Released after the group's supposed break-up, this record features no Ride. It is, as I just mentioned, an instrumental hip hop album. Let's see what it has to offer... And immediately, we are greeted to Runaway J. It features some acid like synths, high pitched chords and industrial sounding percussion. Not bad, but neither anything special. Runway E, on the other hand, is heavy, and had it been a bit more lo-fi, it would have fit very nicely on the legendary Money Store . The percussion sounds dirty and aggressive, the song glitches at points, the bass is heavy and distorted, great track. Runway N is just annoying. The happy sounding synth lead sticks to my brain, and I do not like that. The drums aren't anything special either. Runway n (2) sounds like a more synthetic version of the more rock influenced songs from Exmilitary . The lead synth is so d

Radiohead - Amnesiac

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing the younger brother of Kid A , Amnesiac. Mostly compiled of leftover ideas from the Kid A sessions, we find a weird selection of songs that at points, don't sound very Kid A-y. Let's see how these tracks sound then... Packt Like Sardines In a Crushd Tin Box opens on some metallic SFX, robotic beats and a quiet synth melody. Thom comes in with the singing in one of his deeper vocal performances. This is one of the catchier songs on the album. Pyramid Song, on the other hand, is the melancholic song on here. Whilst I do like it a lot, I feel as if it scratches the same itch as How To Disappear Completely. They both appear at the beginning of the album, and they both have a very sorrowful feel. Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors is just straight up annoying. The drums are OK, but the vocals get tiring. You And Whose Army? is one of the most hopeful and uplifting Radiohead songs, and that's through a simple piano and

Nirvana - Bleach

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing the debut album of Nirvana, Bleach. You should definetly know who Nirvana is, or at least was. Seattle grunge band, they were the kings of rock in the early 90s. Their core line-up consisted of Kurt Cobain on vocals and guitar, Krist Novoselic on bass, and Dave Grohl on drums, however he wouldn't become a part of the band until their second album. So, let's see what this album has to offer... We open with Blew. Hammering drums and a very thicc bassline, like damn. The guitar also sounds pretty good. The vocals do sound a bit awkward, specifically when Kurt is shouting. All in all, a pretty good opener. Next we have Floyd The Barber, which opens on some with hammering drums, thicc bass and some epic guitars, but the vocals sound bad. The sound like a parody of themselves. At points, he sounds like English isn't his first language. About A Girl is a bit catchier than the other two songs. The guitar isn'

Death Grips - Government Plates

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing Death Grips' third studio album, Government Plates. Now kicked out of Epic Records, the group founded Third Worlds. One of the songs on here features Robert Pattinson, of all people. He's actually a big Death Grips fan. Anyway, with that being said, let's get into the review... Right off the bat, we start with the interestingly named, You Might Think He Loves You for Your Money but I Know What He Really Loves You for It’s Your Brand New Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat. And this song culminates everything their previous album lacked, pure, raw aggression, ground shaking synth basses, hammering drums. Amazing opener. And then the pure hyped aggression of the previous track is broken by Anne Bonny. With some heavily filtered vocals, light hearted synths, clean sounding basslines and synthetic sounding drums, I did not enjoy this song. Two Heavens was pretty similiar, only with some better drumming. However, that d

Radiohead - Kid A

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing the guided tour through the apocalypse, Kid A. Thom Yorke, front man of Radiohead said that Kid A will be the name of the first human clone, and that this album represents the environment in which the clone grows up in. With no singles or music videos, and with one of the most critically acclaimed albums of all time being it's predecessor, many people were expecting more rock 'n' roll from Radiohead, similiar to The Bends and OK Computer , but instead, they got a barren wasteland of sound, bringing in many influences from around the music world. Let's see what they've got... Right off the bat, we are greeted to the cold synth chords and glitchy vocals of Everything In It's Right Place. A muted kick drum and weird, heavily filtered vocals ring in the background. This song is emotionally emotionless. By that I mean, the cold synths combined with Thom's vocals create this beautiful, indescri

Skee Mask - Pool

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, we are reviewing Skee Mask's third album and latest one at the time of writing, Pool. This was a surprise release on Bandcamp, and is also available on YouTube. I've heard talks that we doesn't have any plans of releasing it to larger streaming services, and I completely understand, given Bandcamp is a much better service from a monetary perspective. But anyway, let's get into the review. We open on Nvivo, which starts off with some ambient field recordings and highly reverberated SFX. Then a squelchy acid basslines emerges, alongside a quiet beat and occasional synth washes. Later on, louder hi hats come in as well. A very nice opener. Stone Cold 369 is in a similiar vein as the previous track, only this time a bit more bombastic, whilst not crossing the line of loud, glitchy beats. LFO has an array of swirling synths and not that much in terms of a beat. Nice breath of fresh air. Rdvnedub is a bit repetitive, given the

Death Grips - No Love Deep Web

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing Death Grips' second studio album, No Love Deep Web. This is actually part of a pair of albums the band released in 2012, under Epic Records, the other one being The Money Store . However, when it came to this album, the release was rather odd, as Death Grips decided to leak their own of album, at midnight. This of course, did not please Epic Records, which eventually lead to the group getting kicked out of the label. Yeah, a bit weird of a release, but that doesn't matter right now. Now, we talk about the music. The opener greets us with buzzing arpeggio synth tones. After an entire minute, MC Ride comes in with his signature tortured vocals, but this time, they're especially aggressive. In contrast, the instrumental is a bit monotone. Then, Ride stops screaming and continues the song with a much calmer, yet haunting delivery. This opener really tells us what this album has to offer. Lil Boy is much more

Radiohead - OK Computer

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing the best album of all time according to rateyourmusic.com , OK Computer. Radiohead had a massive step up from their debut to their previous album, and this is no different. But is it the best album of all time? That's up for debate. We open on the heavy, yet warm Airbag. The distortion on, basically everything, tells us this album is gonna be hard. The bells add a nice flavour to the percussion and Thom's vocals build on the warm sound of the song. And of course, the guitars are crunchy and punchy, giving us one of the best openers in all of Radiohead history. As acoustic guitars and easy drumming greet us to the next song, Thom hits some especially high notes. Not much to comment on here, but then, the instrumentals swell up a bit to bring in a groovy guitar melody, as Thom pokes fun at someone. The heavy distortion comes back again, alongside a ringing guitar solo at the three minute. But after that, the inst
