Kanye West & Jay Z - Watch The Throne

Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing the collaboration between Kanye West and Jay Z, Watch The Throne. First of all, I will first be reviewing Kanye's side projects, and at the time of writing this post, I am two weeks away from reviewing Kanye's discography. Anyway, Watch The Throne is a collaboration between these two rap giants, but instead of being something like Bad Meets Evil, where Eminem and Royce da 5'9'', would show off theirtechnical skills, here we see Kanye and Jay rap together as a super duo. Let's see what this record has to offer.

We open with No Church In The Wild, a moody opener, filled with pounding drums and some amazing synths. This song doesn't have a very complex instrumental, but it still goes hard. Lyrically, the song mostly talks about the place in which Kanye and Jay are, as being two incredibly powerful people in the business industry.

Next we have Lift Off, featuring Beyonce, but I gotta say, her hook sounds a bit offbeat for me for some reason. I don't know if it's just me, but that's how sounds to me. Apart from that, the song really isn't anything impressive.

OH BUT NEXT... who was in paris? Memes aside, this is by hard the best song on the album. Super hype, great production, great flow, hard hitting bars, amazing.

Next we have Otis, which is a pretty nice song, but damn is that repetitive vocal chop annoying. Why are they playing it every two bars? It's so annoying. If only it weren't so repetitive, I would have enjoyed this song much more.

Gotta Have It is pretty similiar. Whilst the vocal sample isn't as annoying, the song is very boring. Lyrically, instrumentally, nothing impressive.

New Day, on the other hand is one of my favourite songs on here, on the same level as N!ggas In Paris. The instrumental is mainly comprised of a heavily autotuned vocal sample, but it's really subtle and moody here, which goes to show that it doesn't have to be as loud or annoying as on Otis or Gotta Have It. I also really like the mellower production and lyrics.

That's My B!tch is the most forgettable song on here. I can't remember anything from this song.

Welcome To The Jungle is in the same vein. The instrumental is especially bland.

Who Gon Stop Me is a highlight. Kanye's vocals on the hook are a bit distorted, which gives this song some variety. The repeating vocal chop isn't as annoying somehow, and the way it pans to the left and right ear is really hypnotic. Kanye and Jay are especially boastful on this song as well.

Murder To Excellence is another great song on here. The lyrics are especially thoughtful and deep, the instrumental isn't the most impressive, but it works pretty well, and it's overall, a pretty good song, though not the most memorable.

Made In America, on the other hand... if this is what Jesus Is King is gonna be, I'm worried.

And we close with Why I Love You, which is another one of the better songs. The hook is pretty catchy, and the lyrics hit hard. The instrumental is especially nice.

Overall, the album is full of highs and lows. When it goes hard, it goes hard. When it's bad, it's corny, boring or annoying. Aside from a couple tracks, I don't see myself returning to this album.

Favourite tracks: No Church In The Wild, N!ggas In Paris, New Day, Who Gon Stop Me, Murder To Excellence, Why I Love You;
Score: 5/10
