Nirvana - Bleach

 Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing the debut album of Nirvana, Bleach. You should definetly know who Nirvana is, or at least was. Seattle grunge band, they were the kings of rock in the early 90s. Their core line-up consisted of Kurt Cobain on vocals and guitar, Krist Novoselic on bass, and Dave Grohl on drums, however he wouldn't become a part of the band until their second album. So, let's see what this album has to offer...

We open with Blew. Hammering drums and a very thicc bassline, like damn. The guitar also sounds pretty good. The vocals do sound a bit awkward, specifically when Kurt is shouting. All in all, a pretty good opener.

Next we have Floyd The Barber, which opens on some with hammering drums, thicc bass and some epic guitars, but the vocals sound bad. The sound like a parody of themselves. At points, he sounds like English isn't his first language.

About A Girl is a bit catchier than the other two songs. The guitar isn't as distorted and Kurt isn't shouting as much. The bass and drums aren't anything special, but it's an overall good song. Not much else to comment on here.

School is nothing special. The guitar is awesome, but the vocals, especially the hook with "No Recess!", is just irritating and over-dramatic.

Love Buzz is amazing. The guitar is great, that bassline is super catchy, the drums sound clean... but the vocals again. They sound like a parody. They don't even sound like Kurt is singing. Apart from that, the song slaps, the vocals are just way too annoying.

Paper Cuts opens on some guitar squealing, thicc bass and hammering drums. The vocals sound like Kurt, automatically making this song better. The hook sounds dark and toxic. The melodies sound like if Bleach, the substance, was a song. Really good song.

Negative Creep could be mistaken for a heavy metal song. The vocals are aggressive and paranoid even. It all sounds so distorted and heavy. Another great song.

Scoff is a bit more forgettable. No stand out features, nothing we haven't heard before on this album.

Swap Meet is in the same vein. Nothing special on here.

Mr. Moustache brings back the metal sound. The guitar and bass are amazing, the drums are heavy hitting, and the vocals are also pretty good.

Sifting sounds so sludgy, grimey, dirty, like an old Swans song. The guitar is distorted, the bass is thicc and the snares sound very clean, which is something I absolutely love in music. Clean snares are some of my favourites. The solo towards the end sounds menacing and toxic at points. Amazing song.

Big Cheese reminded me a lot of Love Buzz, especially the vocals. The verses sound goofy, but at least the hook is pretty good.

And we close on Downer, a fast and aggressive, speed metal even song. The bass is thicc and heavy, some of the best on the album and the guitar great. Menacing vocals are the cherry on the top.

Overall, the album is not bad. The guitar work and basslines are amazing, clean snares can be found on multiple songs, but the vocals can often be rather annoying. The album is pretty good, but rough around the edges.

Favourite tracks: Blew, About A Girl, Love Buzz, Paper Cuts, Negative Creep, Mr. Moustache, Sifting, Big Cheese, Downer;
Score: 7/10
