Nirvana - Nevermind

Happy Halloween everyone! Today, I will be reviewing Nirvana's sophomore release, Nevermind. After there rough, but acceptable debut, I was curious as to how the band would improve. These guys aren't legendary for no reason. Listening to this album, we see improvements on all fronts from the band. Plus, Dave Grohl is now on drums. Anyway, let's see what they have too offer on here...

and we start with smells like teen spirit. very nice.

then in bloom. very nice.

come as you are.

breed.

and lithium. yeah the beginning of this album goes hard.

Then we take a break from the hard rock with Polly, probably the band's darkest song. It only features an acoustic guitar and Kurt's raspy voice. The song is a tribute to a 14 year old who was kidnapped and tortured, the lyrics reflecting the perspective of the kidnapper. It's haunting, yet hard hitting.

Territorial Pissings sounds like a more aggressive pop punk song. Kurt screams at the top of his lungs on here. Combined with the distorted guitar, it really gives this song a distinct sound.

Drain You has been considered a song just a good as Smells Like Teen Spirit by Kurt. I can see that, but I think it's because they are so similiar. Even the guitar chords sound similiar. But that's not to say it's bad.

Lounge Act is a bit less notable, but still pretty good.

Stay Away sounds really energetic and aggressive. I love it when Kurt's singing combines with the guitar, as they sing the melody during the verses.

On A Plain is just more of the same good old grunge.

And then, what was once the closer, is now the penultimate song. Something In The Way might have been my favourite song on here. The mellow guitar strumming, the painful vocals and even a cello during the chorus, they all create a sad and hopeless feel, reminding me a lot of F# A# Infinity by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Beautiful song!

But then, we have the secret track, and quite possibly my favourite Nirvana song at the moment. Endless, Nameless is aggressive, distorted, abrasive, dirty, muddy, raw and noisy. Pure chaos. The first half is incredibly distorted grunge, but it slowly spirals into a chaotic noise rock piece, with layers of ear-piercing guitars pan from the left to the right. It's dizzying, but I love it sooo much. The way it's barely intelligible by the end is amazing.

This album has some of the best songs I have ever heard. Hard rocking grunge galore. Impressive, not really, but I still highly recommend it.

Favourite tracks: All
Score: 9/10
