Kendrick Lamar - Section.80

Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing the debut studio album from Kendrick Lamar, Section.80. We all know this man, for sure, and given his recent reappearance in the public spotlight, I thought, why not review his modest batch of albums? So let's check out his debut.

After a short spoken word segment, we get into F*ck Your Ethnicity, where we see Kendrick setting his first impression as someone who seeks equality, not caring about what colour you are.

Hol' Up is one of the relaxed songs, with a very smooth instrumental and a smooth flow. The bars are clean, and the hook is very catchy.

Next we have A.D.H.D., talking about how drugs have been a massive problem in people's attention spans. The instrumental is also very clean. The production on here is very well done.

No Make-Up is a favourite of mine, especially the message. Women should stop putting on so much make up, they look much better without it. The instrumental is, once again very well done.

Tammy's Song is one of the darker songs on here, as Kendrick tells us the story of a woman who's fed up with her boyfriend, as she tries to get out of the relationship. The instrumental isn't very interesting tho.

Chapter Six is a slower song, working as a short interlude.

Ronald Reagan Era brings in some light, as it's much more boastful compared to the rest of the songs on here. The hook with "whoopty whoop" is also hilarious.

Poe Mans Dreams is a favourite on here. I love the more lowkey feel of the song, as Kendrick and GLC discuss their every day struggles as black people.

Chapter Ten isn't very noteworthy.

Keisha's Song is also not very special. The instrumental is not very unique, and the bars aren't noteworthy either.

Rigamortus, on the other hand, is one of the groovier songs on here. The instrumental is simple, the flow is fast and clean. A clear highlight.

Oh boy, Kush & Corinthians is another favourite on here. The dark and moody instrumental, the bars, the flow, they all work together to create a late night feel that I absolutely love.

Blow My High isn't very interesting. The instrumental is boring and so are the bars.

Ab-Souls Outro on the other hand, is amazing. The suspenseful jazz instrumental, the fast bars, they all fill me with energy. Slowly, the instrumental fades out, as another short spoken word section comes back.

And the closer, HiiiPower continues this lowkey, thoughtful rap, with clean instrumentals.

For a debut, I can see Kendrick has done a lot of things, and yet he still has a bit of potential. I must also point out that a lot the instrumentals on here are top notch. Clean, moody, jazzy, fits perfectly with Kendrick's style. The album lasts almost an hour, but I never got bored with it.

Score: 9/10
