Death Grips - The Money Store
WE'RE FINALLY TALKING ABOUT IT!!! Welcome back to my blog, and today we are reviewing The Money Store. If you're reading this post, then already know what this album is.
We start with the incredibly catchy Get Got. The repeating synth notes, the explosive drums, the deep voice of Ride spitting cryptic bars. It's amazing.
Now time for my favourite Death Grips song, depending on the day of the week. The Fever is much more aggressive compared to the opener. The swirling drone-like synths in the verse create such an atmosphere, then the dripping plucks in the pre-chorus, then those melodies on the chorus. And of course Ride's performance on here is absolutely amazing.
Then we have Lost Boys, one of the quieter songs on here, but that does not mean it's bad. The electric buzzing that plagues this track, gives it a unique vibe. Then we have the mechanical voices that keep repeating the song's name. And as always, Ride is killing it.
Blackjack is one of the most menacing songs on here. The effects on Ride's vocals create a very specific kind of terror. The drums on here are also surprisingly filtered and squelchy even.
Hustle Bones is sounds considerably different to the previous songs. It has a slower beat, the buzzing synth bass is very clean, and the chorus features vocal chops that create a bit more of a "mainstream" sound for this track, if you can even call it that.
I've Seen Footage has been called by many the band's most accessible, but that doesn't take away from this song. The melodic electro bass, the breathe samples, and the less bombastic vocal performance from Ride, all work together to create a breathe of fresh air.
Double Helix is one of my favourites. The vocal performance is especially dirty and that vocal sample of the woman singing make this track especially memorable.
System Blower is the album's most bombastic song. The crashing glitch noises, the artificial sounding drums and more of the buzzing electro bass. Yeah...
The Cage is rather similiar to Lost Boys, with a very similiar bass and drums, but it's a good song.
Punk Weight is another favourite of mine. It's starts with a Nightcore-like sample of an Arab song. And then... LITERAL BASS BOOST. The instrumental is incredibly distorted, and yet it doesn't overpower Ride's vocals.
Fnck That features very tribal sounding percussion and not so many melodic elements.
B!tch Please is another nice song. Not anything special, but the Oriental sounding sample in the chorus creates a unique sound for the track.
But we end on an incredible high with Hacker. The verse features glitchy instrumentals and loud vocals. But then when the chorus hits, Ride's vocals are buried by a wall of noise created by a buzzing bass and filtered screams. Then we return to the verse, and I just want to point out the vocals on here are especially paranoid and tortured. What a way to end this album.
The sampling, the vocals, the drums, the sounds. This whole album is strong through and through. That's all I can truly say.
