Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I will be reviewing Bottomless Pit. Not The Bottomless Pit, just Bottomless Pit.
We open with Giving Bad People Good Ideas. It starts off with a woman singing the song title. And then... the song literally explodes. The guitars, the drums, the synths, they all clash together, with Ride barely piercing through the mix. Amazing opener.
Next we have Hot Head, which opens very glitchy and noisy, only to move into a much slower section, filled with arps and Ride amongst the synths. Then moving back into the glitchy first section. And then once more, back to the slow part.
Spikes is one of the grooviest songs on here. The bass on here is amazing, and the drums are some of my favourites. They hit especially hard here. The hook is also one of the catchiest. It would have fit in very nicely on The Money Store.
Warping is one of the slowest Death Grips songs I've heard, but the cowbell chorus adds some great energy to the song, making it sound like a phonk song.
Eh is a calmer song, and also features a very sparse mix, reminiscent of No Love Deep Web, only here, it's done correctly.
Bubbles Buried In The Jungle is one of the lesser songs. It doesn't bring anything new to the table.
Trash is noteworthy for me only for the way Ride says Trash. I find it very soothing. Apart from that, the rest is pretty forgettable.
Houdini is another forgettable track, as it, once again, doesn't bring anything new to the table.
BB Poison is similiar. The bass is pretty nice tho.
On the other hand, Three Bedrooms In A Good Neighbourhood is one of my favourite tracks on the album. It features one of my favourite performances by Ride, and the drums are really cool.
Ring A Bell is another great song. Tho I must point out the chorus melody. It reminds me of something, but I don't know what. If you know if they are sampling something on here, please tell me.
80808, alongside Eh, are the best examples of sparse mixes being done right. The squelchy bass gives this song a very unique sound. The growling synths on here are really cool in general.
And the closer, Bottomless Pit, brings back the guitars, making this album, sonically, go in a circle. The guitars on these Death Grips songs fit really well.
Overall, this album was a blast from the past, feelling very much like a sister album to The Money Store, and whilst not as catchy, is still a damn fine record.
